Hedda Gabler

In early-2025, Bhasha Centre gave us an opportunity to perform a ‘mildly rehearsed’ reading of a play of our choosing for their ‘Hear, Here’ programme.

When they requested that we work with seasoned actors, we couldn’t think of a better text to dive into than this Ibsen classic. This is a play that grows so much, and its layers become easier to peel back when it is read in the right voice, with patience for its nuances, and sans any judgment of its (often quite morally questionable) characters.

On multiple occasions while mounting and performing this reading, we thought to ourselves, “this play refuses to fade away or lose relevance — why are we not making a production of it?”. Ultimately (owing also to the love we received for the reading), we did decide to begin working on an adaptation and Hindi translation of Hedda Gabler.

A script is in the works as you read this.

About the Play

A young woman who supposedly has it all is faced with the realisation that this isn’t the life she’d hoped for.
Armed with her prowess of manipulation and deceit, she battles herself, her fate, and those around her.
But can a woman ever really snap out of the clutches of patriarchy? What happens when she comes close?
